Having gained the attention of foursquare, MapQuest, and many others, OpenStreetMap is enjoying another wave of strong growth.
As of June 1, 2012, OpenStreetMap has 622,467 registered users, a 51% increase over 2011. Users can upload GPS traces, improve the coverage of the map in their area, and help build the community by helping complete mapping projects.
The number of ways - the building blocks of roads, buildings, and areas - in OpenStreetMap increased to 137,789,108, a 43% increase in the same time period.
OpenStreetMap’s growth has been affected by many factors - user growth, imports, and worldwide reach due the efforts of groups like the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team.
